We stumbled across this place by accident (as tends to happen with the best places) and were unsure whether it was worth a walk in the pouring rain. Oh but it was. It really was 🤩
Al Liwan offers a plethora of choices for the discerning foodie. Entering the restaurant, you are met with the best of Palestine: artwork proudly displayed, Arabic music plays and the floor is adorned with Bedouin-style cushions. My friends and I were ushered to a table where we had front-row seats to watch the magic of the kitchen. It was a joy to see the chefs at work, deftly maneuvering the contents of the oven. Now, just to determine what we wanted out of that oven 🤔
The shakshouka, za’atar mana’oushe, cheeses, salad and the rest of the breakfast platter, was a delight for the tastebuds. The hummus and baba ganoush, caused a pita-related epiphany.
The food was delicious, most likely the best Palestinian food I have ever had. We ate breakfast there once and returned the next day for a second round. Make sure you have a chat with the owner and head chef- Jack Abdullah- if he is around. Friendly, knowledgeable and funny, his presence enhances the dining experience.
🚦It is set slightly away from the centre of town, but its a journey you will be copiously rewarded for. It would be a brilliant introduction to Palestinian food for the complete beginner too.
