Iceland’s dramatic landscapes, from the steaming geothermal areas to the majestic waterfalls and vast lava fields, combined with its unpredictable weather, create an unforgettable travel experience. However, to fully enjoy your adventure in the “Land of Fire and Ice,” strategic packing is crucial. This post will cover some essential things that I wish I had packed for Iceland.

Note: I visited Iceland in April 2025 as part of a group tour with Tres Adventures. I was extremely happy with this tour company and would recommend them wholeheartedly (I do not make any money if you book with them!). I have another blog post about Unique Experiences Worth Having in Iceland which you might find useful.
Skincare for Drier Climates
The Icelandic air, especially in the highlands, can be incredibly dry and harsh on the skin. A thick, rich moisturizer is absolutely essential to combat dryness and prevent chapping. Consider bringing a hydrating face spray and lip balm too.

Face Covering and Extra Layers
Iceland’s weather is notoriously changeable. I experienced sunshine, rain, and strong winds all on the same day. A face covering, like a scarf or buff, is invaluable for protecting your face from the biting wind. I wish I had one but luckily someone on my tour gave me one. While I did pack multiple layers of clothing, including thermal underwear, fleece jackets, and a waterproof and windproof outer shell, to adapt to the fluctuating temperatures, I wish I had more. I thought I would be fine with one winter jacket but two would’ve been ideal. Remember that zero degrees in Iceland is far more intense than zero degrees anywhere else. Oh and don’t forget warm socks and gloves!

Spices and Other Non-Perishable Goods
Food in Iceland, while delicious, can be quite expensive, especially if you are on a budget. Bringing your own spices and your favourite seasonings can significantly enhance the flavor of your meals. Also, consider packing non-perishable food items like instant noodles, oatmeal, or energy bars for quick and affordable snacks. There may be instances where you’re trapped in a hotel due to unpredictable weather so it’s good to have things packed.

Sturdy Waterproof Hiking Boots
If you plan on exploring Iceland’s natural beauty (and you should!), sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are a must. They will provide the necessary ankle support and keep your feet dry on the often-muddy trails. I cannot stress the importance of making sure the boots are waterproof because my boots were constantly wet. Puddles in your shoes are not fun!

Waterproof Backpack
Keep your belongings safe and dry with a reliable waterproof backpack. This is especially important if you plan on hiking near waterfalls or exploring during rainy weather- and it can and will snow/rain at any moment. So stay ready!

Other Tips for Your Trip
Currency: The Icelandic Króna is the currency used in Iceland. Every shop accepted card payments in Iceland even in remote areas.
Visa: Check visa requirements for your nationality before travelling. I used a Schengen Visa to visit Iceland. My visa was not issued by Iceland but I did not have any problems using it.
Getting around: There are no public transportation options outside of Reykjavik city centre. Your options are renting a vehicle, doing day tours from the city or joining a tour group. Choose what works best for you.
