Unique Experiences Worth Having in Iceland

April 23, 2025 2 Comments

Iceland. The land of fire and ice. A place where raw, untamed nature reigns supreme, offering landscapes that feel both otherworldly and deeply grounding. After visiting 80+ countries, it’s not easy to impress me; but Iceland actually took my breath away. While the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon are undoubtedly iconic, scratching beneath the surface reveals a treasure trove of unique experiences that will elevate your Icelandic adventure from memorable to truly unforgettable. Forget the crowds and the well-trodden paths for a moment, and investigate some extraordinary ways to connect with this captivating island.

I visited Iceland in April 2025 as part of a group tour with Tres Adventures. I was extremely happy with this tour company and would recommend them wholeheartedly (I do not make any money if you book with them!). The company booked all of the tours but I paid for each one. No part of my trip was sponsored- you can find a full cost breakdown below:

Venture Inside an Ice Cave:

Imagine standing within the heart of a colossal ice giant. Forget simply gazing at glaciers from afar; in Iceland, you can actually journey inside them. Guided ice cave tours, like those in Langjökull glacier, offer a breathtaking glimpse into a world of shimmering blue ice and ancient formations. Walking through these icy tunnels, with light filtering through the glacial roof, is an experience that will leave you in awe of nature’s power and beauty. This provides a truly unique perspective on the vast ice caps that sculpt Iceland’s dramatic landscapes.

The company provides helmets and lights. I recommend bringing waterproof gloves.

Hike up a Glacier:

For an awe-inspiring experience, consider a guided walk on Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. Several tours are available, offering the chance to explore the icy landscapes, witness unique ice formations, and learn about the glacier’s history and impact. The tour includes an adventurous jeep ride to the glacier’s edge, maximizing your time on the ice. Be prepared with warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking boots- but if you don’t have any you can always rent a pair which is what I did. Walking on the glacier provides a unique perspective on Iceland’s icy wonders and is an adventure you won’t soon forget.

(You need a certain level of physical fitness to be able to do this activity)

Witness the Northern Lights from a Remote Beach:

Chasing the Aurora Borealis is a bucket-list item for many Iceland visitors. While seeing the dancing green and purple lights is magical in itself, imagine spotting them at a remote beach under the vast, starlit sky as the celestial display unfolds above you. Far from the light pollution of Reykjavik, the Icelandic countryside boasts a long coastline. Picture yourself immersed in glittery black sand, with the ethereal glow of the Northern Lights painting the night sky. This is an experience that combines relaxation, natural wonder, and a touch of pure magic even if it is at the expense of a full night’s sleep.

Go Whale Watching in the Westfjords:

While whale watching tours are popular across Iceland, heading to the remote Westfjords offers a more off-the-beaten-path experience. This dramatic region, characterized by its towering cliffs, deep fjords, and charming fishing villages, is a prime location for spotting a variety of whale species, including humpback whales, minke whales, and even the majestic blue whale. The rugged beauty of the Westfjords coastline provides a stunning backdrop for encountering these gentle giants in their natural habitat, often with fewer crowds than the tours closer to Reykjavik. There is a 90% chance of seeing a whale or dolphin in this vicinity so the odds are in your favour!

The company provides thick suits to keep you warm as well as goggles. I recommend wearing thick gloves, a scarf for your face, a warm hat and thick socks. It gets cold on that boat!

Discover the Secret Waterfall at Seljalandsfoss:

While visiting the popular Seljalandsfoss waterfall, take the opportunity to discover its hidden neighbor, Gljúfrabúi. Just a short walk from Seljalandsfoss, this “secret” waterfall is tucked away inside a narrow gorge. Walk past the main waterfall, towards the end of the path. At one of the hideaways on the right, you will find the entrance to Gljúfrabúi. To fully experience Gljúfrabúi, you’ll need to wade through a small stream and enter a cave, where you’ll be rewarded with a magical view of the cascading water and light filtering from above. The reward for your efforts is the raw beauty of nature, often experienced in peaceful solitude.

If it wasn’t so freezing in Iceland, I would’ve worn a swimsuit- that’s how wet this experience is. But alas, it was cold when I visited so I needed warm as well as waterproof clothes and shoes. A waterproof poncho might prove useful.

Embrace the Unexpected:

Perhaps the most unique experience you can have in Iceland is simply embracing the unexpected. Be open to spontaneous detours, and the ever-changing moods of the weather when seeking out unique experiences worth having in Iceland. So, pack your sense of adventure, and prepare to discover the extraordinary beauty and unique charm that awaits you in this magical land. Your most unforgettable Icelandic experience might just be the one you didn’t plan for.

Tips for Your Trip:

Currency:  The Icelandic Króna is the currency used in Iceland. Every shop accepted card payments in Iceland even in remote areas.

Visa: Check visa requirements for your nationality before travelling. I used a Schengen Visa to visit Iceland. My visa was not issued by Iceland but I did not have any problems using it.

Getting around: There are no public transportation options outside of Reykjavik city centre. Your options are renting a vehicle, doing day tours from the city or joining a tour group. Choose what works best for you.

Packing: You can and will experience multiple seasons in Iceland no matter what time of year you go. I would advise packing extra jackets, gloves, hats and socks because the wind speeds are insane!
