Nestled in the southwestern corner of Bulgaria, Pirin National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its rugged beauty, diverse ecosystems, and pristine glacial lakes. Having never explored Bulgaria before, my sights were set on a specific day hike in Pirin National Park: reaching two of its most captivating glacial eyes, Lake Muratovo and Lake Okoto. This trail was touted as ‘easy’ hikes by the people on the internet but as a moderately fit person, I would classify them differently– particularly for the unfit bunnies among us. Read on to find out more.
I visited Pirin National Park in July 2025 with two of my female friends. We were 3 women in total.
Essential tips for your day hike in Pirin National Park:
Best Time to Go: Late June to early September offers the most favourable weather conditions.
Getting There: For the smoothest journey around Bulgaria, I strongly recommend renting a car. In order to do this, make sure you have an international driver’s permit. The road to Pirin can be narrow and winding in places, but it’s generally well-maintained during the hiking season. There is limited parking available at the chalet.
Gear: Sturdy hiking boots are essential. Layers of clothing are recommended as mountain weather can change quickly. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water.
Navigation: While trails are generally well-marked, carrying a map and compass or using an offline GPS app is always a good idea.
Hydration: Bring a water bottle. You can easily fill at one of the streams along the trail. The water is cool, clean and fresh.
Respect the Park: Pirin is a protected area. Stick to marked trails, do not litter, and respect the wildlife.
Start Early: Especially if you plan a full day’s hike, starting early allows you to enjoy the cooler morning temperatures and provides ample time to complete your route.
Costs: There is no cost to hike for this trail but if you wish to use the (squat) toilet at the beginning of the trail, bring coins.
Accommodation recommendation
We stayed at this apartment in Blagoevgrad which is around a 1.5 hour drive from Bansko. Blagoevgrad offers a variety of accommodations, restaurants, and shops to stock up on essentials.
The Beginning: Bansko and the Drive to Vihren Chalet
Bansko, while primarily known for its winter sports, serves as an excellent starting point for summer hiking adventures in Pirin. Our day began early, with the crisp morning air invigorating the senses.
Our journey deeper into the Pirin mountains began with a scenic drive from Blagoevgrad. We followed the winding mountain road, which offered glimpses of the breathtaking scenery to come, until we reached the Vihren Chalet (Vihren Hut). This popular mountain refuge serves as the primary starting point for many of the most iconic hikes in Pirin, including the ascent to Vihren Peak itself. Parking here was straightforward but it is small and you may need to park further down the road. Midday was the perfect time to arrive because the morning hikers were leaving and the area was already buzzing with fellow hikers preparing for the afternoon adventures.
The trail towards the Lakes: A Symphony of Landscapes
From Vihren Chalet, the path towards the lakes is a gradual ascent through a stunning landscape. Initially, you’ll find yourself amidst fragrant pine forests, their ancient boughs providing welcome shade. In order to stay on the correct trail, follow the blue and yellow flags painted on rocks.
As you climb higher, the trees gradually thin out, giving way to open alpine meadows. Your first landmark (after around 1km) is this wooden bridge.
In order to first see Lake Muratavo, you will continue right off the bridge (do not cross the bridge). You will also spot signs occasionally, pointing you in the right direction.
The air grew cooler and crisper with every meter gained, and the panoramic views began to unfold. To the north, the majestic peaks of the Pirin range stood sentinel, their rocky flanks sculpted by millennia of wind and ice.
Note: The path is VERY rocky and will require proper hiking boots and potentially some scrambling with hands. This is contrary to what you may have read online with many bloggers saying you can easily do this in sneakers- you can do it but you risk discomfort and injury.
Lake Muratovo: A Serene Gem
After a couple of kilometers of steady hiking from Vihren Chalet, our first destination revealed itself: Lake Muratovo. Its elongated shape and slightly darker, deep blue waters give it a serene and captivating allure. Surrounded by meadows and rocky outcrops, it felt wonderfully secluded and offered a fantastic sense of peaceful solitude. I found a perfect spot to take a short break, enjoying the vastness of the Pirin mountains as my backdrop.
If you have snacks, this is the perfect place to enjoy them- just note that there is limited shade and all garbage must be kept with you.
From this lake, you can continue upwards to a more challenging trail or head back the same way to see Lake Okoto (which is what we did).
Onward to Lake Okoto: The Eye of the Mountain
Refreshed and re-energized after consuming some sugar, we continued my journey towards Lake Okoto. The path between Muratovo and Okoto is relatively short and easy, offering more stunning views as you traverse the high alpine terrain. You will have to go down the rocks you climbed earlier- which could be worse or better than the ascent depending on the capability of your knees. On your way down, you are looking for the green flags.
You will reach the wooden bridge again. This time, cross the bridge and continue straight up. You will see a sign for Lake Okoto, just follow it in the direction it points.
Then, the moment arrived. The first glimpse of Lake Okoto (meaning “The Eye” in Bulgarian) took my breath away. Nestled in a rocky cirque, its waters are an intense, almost supernatural, emerald green. The lake’s nearly perfectly round shape gives it its evocative name, and indeed, it feels like the watchful eye of the mountain.
The stillness of the water perfectly reflected the surrounding peaks, creating a mirror image that was almost surreal. I spent a good amount of time here, simply sitting on the shore, soaking in the tranquility and the immense beauty of the place. The silence, broken only by the gentle breeze and the occasional chirping of birds, was incredibly restorative.
The Descent and Reflections
The descent back towards Vihren Chalet was a chance to revisit the stunning vistas from a different perspective. The late afternoon light cast long shadows, highlighting the contours of the mountains and painting the sky in soft hues after the day hike in Pirin National Park.
Hiking to Lake Muratovo and Lake Okoto in Pirin National Park is more than just a walk; it’s an experience that connects you deeply with nature. The pristine beauty of the glacial lakes, the grandeur of the surrounding peaks, and the sense of accomplishment after a good day’s trek leave an indelible mark on your soul.

As someone who hiked this “easy” hike with running sneakers that soon need to be replaced…just get hiking boots and be comfortable 😂😂
Good footwear is so important in this part of the world (as someone whose shoes fell apart from just walking in the CITY)!
If you cross that bridge, you go to lake Ribno. There’s a path between Ribno and Muratovo. We went there last weekend.
