Explore Paros in 4 Days (no car itinerary)

Dreaming of whitewashed villages, sun-drenched beaches, and delicious Mediterranean food but trying to escape the hordes of cruise ship passengers? Look no further than the enchanting island of Paros in Greece. With its laid-back atmosphere and stunning scenery, Paros is the perfect destination for a relaxing four-day getaway. Here’s a guide to help you make the most of your time on this Cycladic gem based on what I would recommend and how to avoid mishaps. Visa Information:

Before you book your flights, it’s crucial to check the visa requirements for your nationality. South African passport holders (and many other nationalities) require a Schengen visa.

Make sure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining upon your planned entry.

Know before you go:

• Currency: The official currency of Greece is the Euro. Pretty much every place in Paros accepts card payments including the bus terminal.
• Language: Greek is the official language of Greece. Locals are very accustomed to tourists and speak English easily.
• Transportation: The towns of Naousa, Parikia and Lefkes are very walkable. To travel between towns, the bus system works well.You can find the most up-to-date bus timetable for Paros on the KTEL Paros website. This is an essential resource for planning your day trips around the island.
• Accommodation: Paros offers a range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to comfortable hotels and apartments. My friend and I stayed at this locally owned and run boutique hotel (not an affiliate link). It was very clean and comfortable, with an excellent location. 
• Best Time to Visit: The summer months (June-September) are ideal for visiting Paros because everything is open and operational. Shoulder season is cooler but there are less ferries and many businesses are closed.

I felt quite safe walking around different parts of Paros, even at night. 

Getting There: Ferry Tips

Your Paros adventure likely begins in Athens. The most scenic and common way to reach the island is by ferry from the port of Piraeus. Several ferry companies operate this route (including Blue Star Ferries and Seajets), offering multiple departures daily, especially during peak season. Ferry Hopper is a great website to compare all ferry companies and book tickets.

Ferries can- and will get cancelled or delayed in Greece no matter the time of year. The sea conditions can be unpredictable. It is my recommendation not to book flights on days you need to catch ferries. Give yourself 2 buffer days on either side of a ferry journey. If you’re on a time crunch, I advise flying to Paros instead of taking a ferry.

Booking Tip: It’s highly recommended to book your ferry tickets in advance, especially if you’re traveling in July or August. The journey between Athens and Paros typically takes between 3 to 5 hours depending on the type of ferry (conventional or high-speed).

Where to Base Yourself: Charming Parikia

For your four-day trip, basing yourself in Parikia, the main port town of Paros, is an excellent choice. This is where the ferries drop you off and if you plan it perfectly, you can walk from the ferry terminal your accommodation. It offers a vibrant atmosphere with its charming old town, bustling harbour, and a wide range of accommodations, restaurants, and shops. You’ll also find the main bus station here, making it easy to explore the rest of the island.

Day By Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Parikia Exploration

Upon arrival in Parikia, settle into your accommodation and take some time to wander through the labyrinthine streets of the old town. Admire the traditional Cycladic architecture, with its whitewashed houses adorned with colorful bougainvillea. Enjoy a leisurely dinner at one of the many tavernas lining the harbour front, savouring fresh seafood or traditional Greek dishes.

Day 2: Sun-Kissed Bliss at Kolymbithres Beach

Today is all about relaxation and soaking up the Aegean sun. Take a bus or a water taxi from Naoussa (easily accessible by bus from Parikia) to the famous Kolymbithres beach. This unique beach is characterized by its smooth, sculpted granite rocks creating picturesque coves with crystal-clear turquoise waters. Find your perfect spot, rent a sunbed, and enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and perhaps even some light snorkeling. Several tavernas and beach bars are located nearby for lunch and refreshments.

Getting to Naoussa & Kolymbithres: Buses from Parikia to Naoussa are frequent, especially during the summer months. From Naoussa, you can either take another short bus ride or a charming water taxi to Kolymbithres.

Day 3: Inland Charm in Lefkes

Escape the coastal crowds and venture inland to the beautiful mountain village of Lefkes. Take a local bus from Parikia. This former capital of Paros is perched on a hillside, offering stunning panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea. Wander through its narrow, car-free streets, admire the Venetian architecture. Enjoy a traditional Greek coffee at a local kafeneio and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. 

Day 4: Departure or More to Explore

Depending on your ferry schedule, you can enjoy a final morning in Parikia, perhaps doing some souvenir shopping or revisiting your favorite spot. If your ferry departs later in the day, consider taking a bus to another beautiful beach on the island, such as Livadia or Marcello near Parikia, for a last dip in the Aegean.

Four days in Paros offer a perfect blend of relaxation, exploration, and authentic Greek charm. From the unique beauty of Kolymbithres beach to the traditional village of Lefkes and the vibrant atmosphere of Parikia, this itinerary provides a fantastic framework for your Aegean escape.
