Unforgettable Viewpoints in Capri (Southern Italy)

Capri is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and stunning sea views, making its panoramic viewpoints a must-visit feature when exploring the island. I personally thought that most things on Capri were incredibly overpriced and expensive; so exploring the island’s walking trails was a great way to stay active for free while seeing some beautiful views.

Whether you’re seeking the iconic Faraglioni rock formations or expansive vistas over the Bay of Naples and Amalfi Coast, viewpoints in Capri offer unforgettable experiences. Here’s what they are and how to plan your visits:

1. Monte Solaro

• Location: Anacapri

• Highlights: The highest point on the island at 589 meters, offering sweeping views of the entire island, surrounding seas, and distant mountains.
• How to get there: The easiest way is by chairlift from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri, a scenic 12-minute ride. Alternatively, you can hike up, which typically takes between 1 to 1.5 hours.
• Terrain: If hiking, expect a trail with some elevation gain, suited for those comfortable with moderate uphill walking.
• Cost: 14EUR for a round trip and 11EUR for one way- you could go up and walk down.

2. Via Krupp

• Location: About a 20-minute walk from Capri’s main square (Piazetta). The walk up takes slightly longer because it’s uphill, however, it’s not difficult. 

• Highlights: A picturesque viewpoint perfect for photos of the Faraglioni rocks with framing foliage and sea views.
• Terrain: The walk is mostly on pedestrian paths and urban streets, making it accessible for most visitors.
• Cost: Free

3. Arco Naturale via Via Matermania

• Location: Coastal trail starting near Capri town. It’s a quick 20 minute walk where you walk directly through the entirety of the town. There is only one steep part (a 5 minute bit).

• Highlights: Natural arch rock formation, coastal views, Casa Malaparte perched on cliffs.

• Walk duration and terrain: I recommend starting at Arco Naturale and walking towards Belvedere Punta Tragara. If you follow this route (in this order), you would be walking down hundreds of stairs- instead of ascending them. The hike can take 1.5-2 hours at a relaxed pace and includes uneven stairs, exposed cliffside paths, and some steep, rocky segments. I would still classify this as an easy walk if you can handle stairs and some inclines.
• Cost: Free

Belvedere Punta Tragara

• Location: Near the southeast side of Capri town.

• Highlights: Spectacular views of the Faraglioni and the Tyrrhenian Sea; peaceful and not crowded.
• How to get there: About a 20-minute stroll from the Piazzetta, along a scenic walkway lined with villas and greenery. You could easily combine this with Arco Naturale (as outlined above)
• Terrain: Mostly flat and easy walking on paved paths.
• Cost: Free

Tips for Exploring the Viewpoints

• Many trails have uneven terrain and staircases. Comfortable walking shoes are essential but no need for hiking boots.
• If you are travelling in summer,  note that hydration and sun protection are important. Many paths are no shaded so I would bring a hat.
• If time is limited, focus on one or two viewpoints to fully enjoy without rushing.
• Early morning or late afternoon visits are preferred to avoid crowds and heat.
• Respect Nature: Stay on marked trails, do not litter, and protect the fragile alpine environment.

ACCOMMODATION RECOMMENDATION

I stayed at this boutique hotel opposite the Capri port. It is a small  locally owned and operated hotel.  In order to get to the town swiftly from this hotel, you had to take the funicular (2.40EUR one way). It was simple enough but you could also consider staying in the town itself- although this might be more expensive. 

Restaurant recommendations:

I found eating out in Capri to be exorbitantly expensive in relation to what you receive. If you are on a really tight budget, you might consider renting a place where you can prepare your own food. If you’re on a day trip, you could bring food with you. If you are looking for restaurant recommendations, here are the places I ate at:

• Ristorante Augusto Capri: Right opposite the port, they have an ideal location. The food is good and the portions are large. Don’t miss the drinks served in the giant lemons.

• Ristorante Panorama Capri: Down a few side streets, away from the hustle and bustle of the town is this upmarket restaurant with an amazing view. The sesame seared tuna was a winner. 

• Da Paolino: A gorgeous restaurant set in a lemon grove. It’s set in a suburb so you need to walk a bit to find it but it’s so worth it. They have a huge desert room where you can choose your deserts so save space! 

General Tips for Visiting  Capri

Best Time to Visit: July and August are the busiest season. This is when I visited. Everything was open but the daylight hours do get busy due to day trippers from Naples. Early autumn (September, early October) would probably be the best time to visit however, certain establishments might be closed.

Getting There: Getting a ferry from Sorrento or Naples would be the simplest choice. You can use Caprinet to book tickets. 

Bring cash: You can pay for most things with a card, but cash is essential for small purchases and tips!
