Eating your way through Belgrade, Serbia

September 15, 2024 6 Comments

I’ve lived in Belgrade for over a year and at first I really struggled to find good food options. While the quality of food in Serbia is generally high (because they employ a farm to table policy in most places), I just missed things with real flavour. Serbian food- while sometimes nice- lacks the punchy kick and diverse variety that I crave when eating out. Thankfully , through careful research and recommendations from locals, I’ve come to understand that Belgrade, the vibrant capital of Serbia, can offer a delightful culinary journey for food enthusiasts. You just need to know where to go. With a rich history and diverse influences, the city boasts a vibrant food scene that caters to all tastes. From authentic Chinese to international flavours, there’s something to satisfy every palate that wants to start eating your way through Belgrade, Serbia.

Curry Souls

Curry Souls is a no frills place in Belgrade, offering a taste of Sri Lanka’s vibrant cuisine. Their authentic dishes, like the aromatic kottu and the flavorful fish curry, are packed with bold spices and fresh ingredients. You can customise your spice levels which is rare in a country where most ethnic restaurants serve watered down versions of local cuisine to accommodate Serbians’ lack of spice tolerance. I’ve eaten here multiple times and would recommend the Sri Lankan milk tea AND not OR the homemade ginger beer to accompany your meal. The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere make it a perfect spot for a delicious and memorable meal.

Lorenzo & Kakalamba

Lorenzo & Kakalamba is a popular restaurant in Belgrade’s vibrant food scene. Their menu is a delightful fusion of Italian and Serbian flavours, resulting in dishes that are both familiar and exciting. The ambiance is quirky and inviting, featuring many sculptures, statues and oddities placed around the venue. Its central location also makes it the perfect spot for a leisurely meal with friends or family.

Little Bay

Who wouldn’t want to dine in an opera theatre converted into a cosy restaurant? What I love about this restaurant is that you honestly feel transported back in time. This restaurant is known for its live music and each night has a different music genre on offer. The three course set menu is value for money offering a wide variety of seasonal dishes with exquisite flavours. It gets bust after 7pm so make a reservation.

WangJiao Chinese Restaurant

Did you know that large groups of Chinese migrants settled in Serbia in the 1990s (GlediΔ‡, 2021) creating a large present day community of Chinese people in Serbia? A happy result of this global migration is the presence of many amazing Chinese restaurants in Belgrade. WangJiao is one of my two favourites; the restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes, from classic favorites like Peking duck to regional specialties. The flavors are bold and fresh, and the portions are generous. Don’t leave without trying the light, fluffy and delicious panda custard buns!

Lutak Patisserie

Lutak Patisserie in Belgrade is a haven for pastry lovers, offering an exquisite selection of baked goods that elevate the art of patisserie to new heights. This elegant spot combines charm and sophistication, making it a standout destination for anyone seeking a delightful treat or a refined dessert experience. Each creation is a visual and gastronomic delight, crafted with precision and an evident passion for excellence. The flavours are balanced and sophisticated, reflecting both classic techniques and innovative touches.Β

Uganda Connect

Uganda Connect in Belgrade offers a taste of East African cuisine that’s truly unforgettable. More than that, the restaurant will β€œfeel like home’ for many Africans.  Upon entering the cafΓ©, you are immediately struck by the atmosphere filled with woven baskets, beaded jewelry and stunning murals on the walls. Their menu features a variety of flavorful dishes, from the hearty matoke stew to the humble yet elevated Rolex. End your meal off with aromatic mandazi and a spiced milk tea. Overall this is not just a place for a good meal but also a journey into the world of African culture and taste.

Youran Tea House

Nestled in the heart of Belgrade, Youran Tea House is a hidden gem for tea aficionados and anyone in search of a tranquil escape from the bustling city streets. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere is serene and inviting, with a decor that blends traditional charm with modern elegance. Youran Tea House shines in its tea offerings. The menu features an impressive variety of high-quality teas, ranging from classic Chinese varieties to unique blends and infusions. While the primary focus here is on tea, the food offerings are worth noting. Their ramen and dumplings are the stars of the show. Leaving without trying a bubble tea would be a cardinal sin!

Kafeterija Šećer

Kafeterija Ε eΔ‡er offers a charming and pretty escape in the vibrant city of centre. Known for its inviting atmosphere and delightful offerings, this cafΓ© quickly establishes itself as a local favorite and a must-visit for both residents and visitors. The cafΓ© boasts a warm and eclectic interior, with a mix of vintage and contemporary decor that creates a welcoming environment.Kafeterija Ε eΔ‡er excels in its coffee offerings, with a menu that features a variety of expertly crafted drinks. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic espresso, a rich cappuccino, or a unique specialty brew, the cafΓ© delivers high-quality beverages. More than that, it also offers MANY options for those who don’t drink coffee (this is a rarity in coffee-obsessed Belgrade). I would not come here for a meal but it’s a great place to enjoy a dessert, relax, work, or socialise, making it a notable addition to the city’s vibrant cafΓ© scene.

Γ‰tage | Voulez-Vous

It seems odd to find sushi at a restaurant with a French name but of course, this somehow makes sense in Belgrade (a place where little makes sense). The sushi at Voulez Vous Etage is exceptional, showcasing the highest standards of freshness and craftsmanship. The menu features a diverse range of options, from classic nigiri and sashimi to inventive rolls and specialty creations. Each dish is beautifully presented, highlighting the chef’s attention to detail and commitment to quality. The ingredients are fresh and meticulously sourced, resulting in vibrant flavours and perfect textures. Whether you’re looking for a refined sushi meal or a special place to celebrate, Voulez Vous Etage delivers a dining experience that is sure to impress.

Now even though this is technically a post about eating your way through Belgrade, here are some honourable mentions if you’re travelling out of the capital city:

Vida (Novi Sad)

Vida in Novi Sad is a standout destination that blends modern sophistication with a warm, inviting atmosphere. As a relatively new addition to the local dining scene, Vida has quickly garnered attention for its thoughtful approach to both cuisine and ambiance. If I were you, I would come here for brunch so that you can have the best of the breakfast and regular menu. The Gingerbread hot chocolate, potato bomb and pistachio cream pancakes are out of this world!

Denis Gastro Temple (Subotica)

Denis Gastro Temple stands out as a top dining destination in Subotica, offering a memorable experience through its vibrant ambiance, creative cuisine, and attentive service. I was surprised to find a restaurant of this quality in such a small town but, I am glad I stumbled upon it! Denis Gastro Temple shines with its diverse and well-executed menu. The offerings range from inventive appetisers and hearty main courses to indulgent desserts. The dishes are prepared with fresh, quality ingredients and showcase a variety of flavours and textures. The menu caters to various tastes, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Standout items often include their signature dishes, which are not only flavorful but also artistically presented.

Β Restoran Pasent (Sremski Karlovci)

Restoran Pasent in Sremski Karlovci offers a charming dining experience that captures the essence of traditional Serbian cuisine with a modern twist. Located in the picturesque town known for its rich history and beautiful landscapes, Pasent is a standout destination for both locals and visitors seeking a memorable meal. The menu at Restoran Pasent is a celebration of traditional Serbian flavors and ingredients, presented with a modern flair. The dishes are well-prepared and showcase the rich culinary heritage of the region. Highlights include a Fish Paprikash Stew crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients and served with crushed chilli on the side. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit for a satisfying and enjoyable dining experience, boasting an impressive riverside view.

Whether you’re looking for traditional Serbian specialties or international flavours, you’re sure to find something to satisfy your desires when eating your way through Belgrade, Serbia.

Food isn’t that good in Belgrade, you are over rating it.

Belgrade is definitely not a place should come specifically to eat but in case someone finds themselves in the city, I provided my picks.

Honestly every place has their good and bad. I lived in Milan for almost 3 years and thought the food overall was mediocre. However I found Los Angeles amazing because of the availability and diversity.
