If you’re a long time reader of this blog (for which I thank you!), you will know that I try to go beyond the obvious when travelling. While the popular and obvious choices of things to do and see in Bosnia are simply stunning in their own way, I do think there is much more to offer in this country.
My earlier research led me to try white water rafting in Tara Canyon and hiking to Trnovačko Lake. I loved those experiences so much that I decided to return to Bosnia a few months later. Zelengora, often referred to as the “green mountain,” is a gem in Bosnia and Herzegovina. With its pristine glacial lakes, lush forests, and towering peaks, it’s a hiker’s paradise. While exploring the entire mountain range requires multiple days, a well-planned itinerary can allow you to experience some of its magic in just one day.

This hike starts at a little town called Foča (pronounced For-cha).
How to get to Foča?
The easiest way to get to Foča is to hire a car. This is what I did and I do not regret it. The drive is an easy 1.5 hours from Sarajevo or 4.5 hours from Belgrade which is where I was coming from. You will be on windy narrow mountain roads for most of the route and there are police along the route monitoring speed. All roads are tarred and are suitable for all cars.
However, if you don’t drive, it’s possible to get a bus from Sarajevo to Foča. You can check Flixbus for routes and prices.

How much time do I need for this hike?
Hiking to Gornje and Donje Bare requires a day (from 09:00) but the ending time does depend on how much time you spend at the lakes and how fast you hike. The views are spectacular so I would not rush.
Hiking to Gornje and Donje Bare
My advice is to stay in the heart of Foča so you can start the day with a fabulous hot chocolate and hake sandwich at Mozart Cafe in Foca before meeting your guide. My guide, Dejan, is someone I strongly recommend and can be booked by getting in touch with Active Holidays Bosnia.
Dejan drove us in his 4WD vehicle to the hiking starting point which consists of an hour on terrible roads! As we drove, he collected our lunch from a restaurant on the way and told us about the history of the area. The hike typically begins at a parking area near Borovno Brdo. This is where we left the vehicle and started our adventure.

The trail to Gornje Bare is relatively easy, winding through forests and offering glimpses of the lake as you ascend. Once you reach Gornje Bare, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the crystal-clear water surrounded by verdant hills.

From Gornje Bare, you can continue to Donje Bare. This part of the hike is slightly more challenging, but the effort is worth it. Donje Bare is often considered even more beautiful than its counterpart, with its deeper waters and more secluded atmosphere. You can also drive close to Donje Bare if you don’t feel like hiking between the two. There is parking nearby.

We ended the day with a quick but steep ascent to the Borić Viewpoint.

While hiking is the main attraction, there’s more to enjoy in the Zelengora area. Consider spending some time relaxing by the lakes, picnicking, or simply soaking in the tranquillity of the surroundings. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some local wildlife.
Tips for hiking to Gornje and Donje Bare:
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the path can be slightly slippery in certain areas.
- The weather can change in an instant. We experienced rain, sunshine and icy wind in the space of a few hours. Pack accordingly.
- Bring a full large water bottle- there’s no place where you can refill with pure clean water.
- Pack a swimsuit if the weather is warm- you can swim in the lakes.
Costs:
Hiking to Gornje and Donje Bare with private guide: €70 per person (includes all entry fees)
As I mentioned earlier, this hike was organised by Active Holidays Bosnia. They are prompt, efficient and great with taking care of details. I would highly recommend using their services!
